Gaia is the personification of the Earth in Greek mythology. The Gaia theory proposes that the Earth can organise its own recovery from damage, in order to restore and maintain the correct conditions for life to continue. This song imagines a future where the goddess has overseen this process herself.
lyrics
When Gaia woke and saw her Earth
Engulfed in smoke, her own flames spoke
So, as she turned, saw how Earth burned
She knew she had to act
We’d plundered, hampered and destroyed
Ignored the science, the facts denied
Trod money’s path, with power too
And let the despots thrive
For what is hers, should be ours too
But eons spent on just one view
The self – the self, and nothing else would do
Then Gaia woke
So Gaia turned. What could she do?
Let nature win, let nature choose
And sit and wait, its course to take
She did what she should do
And then she rested, closed her eyes
She’d used our habits to decide
She hoped the difference it would make
Would keep her Earth alive
For what is hers, should be ours too
But eons spent on just one view
The self – the self, and nothing else would do
